In the Artist POV Tour series, ICA LA invites artists to lead tours of our current exhibitions, offering their unique and necessary perspective as working artists in the field. On this special evening, artist and educator Cheri Gaulke will lead a tour of Barbara T. Smith: Proof and share stories of working together with Smith throughout the years.
Cheri Gaulke is a pioneer in the feminist art movement associated with the Woman’s Building in Los Angeles. She is known for her performance art, public art commissions, and award-winning films. Gaulke’s work has been presented at the Museum of Modern Art (NY), the Museum of Contemporary Art (LA), in a Smithsonian-touring exhibition, and in settings all over the world including buses, churches, and prehistoric temples. Her solo and collaborative performance work (Feminist Art Workers and Sisters Of Survival) was featured in two Getty-sponsored Pacific Standard Time exhibitions. Gaulke has received artist fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, California Arts Council, City of Los Angeles, California Community Foundation, and California Humanities. In recent years, Gaulke has shifted her focus to filmmaking. Recent films include Gloria’s Call about women artists of surrealism (Best Documentary, Ann Arbor Film Festival), Miss Alma Thomas: A Life in Color about an under-recognized African-American artist (traveling with a museum retrospective exhibition), and Inside the Beauty Bubble about the owner of a roadside attraction in Joshua Tree California (numerous audience and other festival awards). Gaulke is also an award-winning educator using film to raise awareness and empower youth voices and the Artistic Director of The Righteous Conversations Project, which brings teens together with Holocaust survivor elders to create media works. Gaulke is currently in post-production on Acting Like Women, a feature documentary about feminist performance art in 1970s-80s Los Angeles.
