Samar Al Summary: Excavating the Sky
On view in ICA LA’s Project Room will be the first institutional solo exhibition by Los Angeles-based artist Samar Al Summary. Working across video, photography, installation, and text, Al Summary’s practice investigates systems of power and patriarchy. Taking up the transgeographical conditions of displacement, war, and economic collapse, her works explore the sites of the border, the ruin, and the archive to reveal complex and personal narratives of revolution and resilience.
**Samar Al Summary** (b. 1988 in Jeddah; lives and works in Los Angeles) studied at UCLA following her undergraduate studies at the University of Arizona. From 2019-2020, she was part of the Ashkal Alwan Home Workspace Educational Fellowship in Beirut, Lebanon and in 2022, she studied at Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Maine. Her most recent exhibitions include Organ Vida International Photography Festival in Zagreb, Croatia (2020); Film Festival Oberhausen at Oberhausen, Germany (2020); Rencontres de la Photographie at Marrakech, Morocco (2019); and Voices Off Awards Screening at Arles, France (2019).
Samar Al Summary: Excavating the Sky is organized by Amanda Sroka, Senior Curator, with Emilia Shaffer-Del Valle, Curatorial Associate, and research support provided by Amelie Wu, Getty Marrow Curatorial Intern.
