Mohammad Tayyeb’s “Sphere from Paradise”

July 22
11 AM - 9 PM
Performance
Screenings
Artist-in-Residence

Realized as part of ICA LA’s Artist in Residence Program, current AIR Mohammad Tayyeb presents “Sphere from Paradise," an eight-hour durational performance that includes sound, moving image, and contributions from invited artists and collaborators Hana Elrakhawi and Batool Elhenawy. Using prayer beads sourced from the artist’s recent travels to Egypt, and accompanied by a soundtrack of Sufi songs and poetry, the performance begins in the galleries wherein Tayyeb will conduct 70,000 prayers over the course of several hours. The evening will conclude with series of film screenings and tea. At once intimate and expansive, through Tayyeb’s performance and spiritual practice, a collective ritual of light and energy transformation unfolds.

Schedule of Events
Performance: 11am - 7pm
Screening: 7:30pm - 9pm

Mohammad Tayyeb is a Los Angeles-based multidisciplinary artist working in performance, visual art, mixed media collage, and community centered projects. Their practice brings fragments into relation, including histories, inheritances, and dispersed ways of knowing. Through ritual and sound, body and voice serve as vessels for memory, proximity, and care, and as portals into states of oneness. Through collage, Tayyeb gathers printed matter, archival fragments, textiles, and found materials into forms where joining is intentional and process remains visible. Drawn to thresholds where absence meets presence, they attend to what lingers just out of frame. The work is a ritual of return and an ongoing attempt to grasp self, the world, and the time they live in, and to move within a larger orbit.
