William Deverell is an American historian with a focus on the nineteenth and twentieth century American West. He has published widely on the history and culture of the 19th and 20th century West. He received his undergraduate degree in American Studies from Stanford and his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in American History from Princeton. He is the founding director of the Huntington-USC Institute on California and the West. He co-founded the Los Angeles Service Academy, which teaches high school students about the infrastructure of greater L.A. Current projects of the Institute on California and the West include the Chinatown History Project and the West on Fire Initiative.
