In her first Los Angeles museum presentation, artist Liz Hernández (b. 1993, Mexico City; lives and works in Oakland, CA) presents a new, site-specific mural on ICA LA’s 7th street facade. A multidisciplinary artist working across painting, drawing, sculpture, embroidery, and writing, Hernández is recognized for a singular visual language influenced by Mexican cultural traditions and crafts, legends and folktales, Catholic iconography, and her own familial memories. Titled Donde piso, crecen cosas (Where I step, things grow), Hernández’s mural will feature a patchwork of text and images addressing the ongoing attacks on immigrant and undocumented populations throughout the United States. Drawing from a deeply personal place, Hernández’s work will offer a narrative expressing a complexity of related feelings and honor the ways affected communities continue to live, grow, and nourish one another amidst attempts to silence and to stifle.
