‘Grandfather: A Pioneer Like Us’ represents more than #HaraldSzeeman’s fascination with his grandfather - it’s an example of his visionary outlook about the role of a curator: curation beyond the institutional space to the domestic; an exhibition of accumulation versus art forms. It’s an insight into the mind of Szeemann. This week we look at the revolutionary curator with 2 #free talks: personal accounts and anecdotes about Szeemann by The Good Works Executive Director Elsa Longhauser and curator Philipp Kaiser will be discussed tonight, 7:30pm in ‘Harald and Elsa: The Kingdom of Referentials’ + @pictorialreference, Sue Spaid and Patricia A. Morton will pose the question, ‘are curators artists, too?’ in Boxing Philosophical this Friday, March 16 at 7:30pm. For more info visit our Event page 👉 theicala.org | #icala
Did you know there’s an apartment in our main gallery? A full-size reconstruction of the late curator Harald Szeeman’s home nearly 6000 miles away in Bern, Switzerland has been revived @theicala to create the 1974 installation, ‘Grandfather: A Pioneer Like Us’. Inside, the apartment has been filled with objects and inventions belonging to the curator’s grandfather, Étienne Szeemann, a noted hairdresser. This exhibition is in conjunction with @gettymuseum #GettyResearchInstitute - visit ‘Grandfather: A Pionner Like Us’ thru April 22 | #grandfatherapioneerlikeus #haraldszeeman #architecture #archidaily #dtla #icala

“Perhaps the most intensely personal of Szeemann’s shows, it speaks to meticulous, exhaustive obsession” - Christopher Knight @latimes reviews ‘Grandfather: A Pioneer Like Us’ - a recreation of the late curator #HaraldSzeemann’s apartment in Bern, Switzerland, which he had turned into a museum in 1974. The installation @theicala is a satellite show in conjunction with @GettyMuseum’s survey ‘Harald Szeemann: Museum of Obsessions’ that looks at his life and work through the colossal archive he had amassed. This Sunday performance artist and @ucla professor Andrea Fraser presents a lecture in conjunction with her essay, ‘Toward a Reflexive Resistance’ published in @xtraartjournal Volume 20 number 2. The essay discusses how artists and arts institutions both challenge and reinforce established relations of power, and the importance of critical reflexivity in the face of complex forms of domination in relation to the cultural capital in the wake of the 2016 American Presidential elections. #AndreaFraser is one of our featured #5WomenArtists during @WomenintheArts month this March. Her multidisiplinary practice of institutional critique + #feminist #performance groups continues in both relevancy and potency surrounding #politics, histories and commerce within the walls of a museum and beyond. ‘Andrea Fraser: Toward a Reflexive Resistance’ is a free #arttalk this Sunday, March 11 at 3pm @theicala - RSVP via the Calendar page 👉 theicala.org | #internationalwomensday #icala
