Teresa Baker: Somewhere Between Earth and Sky

In spring 2027, ICA LA will present Teresa Baker: Somewhere Between Earth and Sky. The most comprehensive presentation of Baker’s work to date, the exhibition will feature works made over the last decade—including a newly commissioned mural as well as a selection of over two dozen paintings, recent sculptures, and a suite of rarely exhibited drawings—that illuminate the artist’s persistent investigations into shape, color, line, and the natural world.

An enrolled member of the Three Affiliated Tribes in the Great Plains, Baker was born in North Dakota, which instilled in her a profound connection to the land. Inviting us to consider how we make sense of the world both around and inside of us, the exhibition draws on Baker’s Mandan and Hidatsa heritage to invigorate and reconstruct Eurocentric histories of landscape painting, craft, and abstraction. Central to the exhibition are Baker’s multi-media paintings. At first glance, these works appear to be formal abstractions, yet their materials and yarn-drawn lines reveal them to be recordings, notations, and psychogeographic mappings of place, time, and personal memories, as further alluded to in artwork titles such as Mapping the Territory (2024) and Field Notes (2022). Across their surfaces, the expanses of the Great Plains and childhood memories of playing in its prairies conflate with the sun-baked topographies of California, and the colorful metropolis of the LA cityscape. Imbued with a deep sense of longing, experimentation, and play, Baker’s works are landscapes of memory.

Spliced, stitched, sprayed, cut, and glued, her landscapes are at once a painting, a sculpture, and a textile. A characteristic of Baker’s work is the coupling of synthetic AstroTurf with culturally and personally relevant natural materials such as yarn, buckskin, parfleche, cornhusks, and willow branches. The brightly colored artificial AstroTurf is perhaps an unexpected proxy for the sprawling grasslands of the Northern Plains, yet Baker intentionally uses this material to speak to notions of adaptability and continuance. In this way, the AstroTurf is a metaphor for what scholar Gerald Vizenor terms “survivance,” or the presence of Native American cultures amidst historical and ongoing acts of violence and assimilation. Importantly featured in the exhibition is a selection of Baker’s drawings on ledger paper, with abstract shapes rendered in brightly colored pastels atop the artist’s writings, which vary in content from a to do list, to a reminder, to a proverb. The intimacy of their scale and Baker’s own scribbles offer a deeper invitation into the artist’s interior world.

Organized by Dean Daderko, Ferring Foundation Chief Curator at the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis, ICA LA’s presentation will be conceived in dialogue with Senior Curator Amanda Sroka, who will work closely with Daderko and Baker on reimagining the exhibition for the ICA LA context. Somewhere Between Earth and Sky at ICA LA will serve as Baker’s most significant presentation on the west coast, enabling her practice to be celebrated and contextualized in the very city in which many of the works were made.

About the Artist
Teresa Baker: Somewhere Between Earth and Sky is organized for the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis by Dean Daderko, Ferring Foundation Chief Curator, with support from Grace Early, Exhibitions Assistant. The presentation at ICA LA is organized by Amanda Sroka, Senior Curator, with Emilia Shaffer-Del Valle, Curatorial Associate.

Teresa Baker (b. 1985, Watford City, North Dakota) is an artist living and working in Montana, and an enrolled member of the Three Affiliated Tribes in the Great Plains. Through a mixed media practice combining artificial and natural materials together, Baker creates abstracted landscapes that explore vast space, and how we move, see, and explore within them. The materials, texture, shapes, and color relationships are guided by Baker’s Mandan/Hidatsa culture. In her practice, Baker imbues innate objects with culture and identity.

Baker has had recent solo exhibitions at the Contemporary Art Museum, St. Louis; American Academy of Arts and Letters, New York; de boer, Los Angeles; Broadway Gallery, New York; The Arts Club of Chicago; Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art; Halsey McKay Gallery, East Hampton; Pied-à-terre, San Francisco; and The Art Museum of Southeast Texas, Beaumont. She was one of the featured artists in the Prospect. 6 Triennial, New Orleans, LA, and has participated in group exhibitions at the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; The Wattis Institute, San Francisco; Ballroom Marfa; and the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art, Kansas City.

Baker was a 2025 Guggenheim fellow, a 2022 Joan Mitchell Fellow, and the recipient of the 2020 Native American Fellowship for Visual Artists at the Ucross Foundation. Baker was a Tournesol Artist-in-Residence at The Headlands Center for the Arts, and participated in artist residencies at FOGO Island Arts in Newfoundland, and MacDowell in New Hampshire. The Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, Yale University Art Gallery, and the Portland Museum of Art, Maine have recently acquired the artist’s work. Baker received her MFA from California College of the Arts and her BA from Fordham University.
