Mandy Harris Williams is an artist, writer, and former school teacher. Her project Raising My Voice is based on her observations while teaching in the classroom. In light of the recent LAUSD Teachers Strike and the current US government shut down, young people are witnessing moments of protest, strike, shutdown, and exasperation. How do they make sense of these moments of elevated tension and how can they learn from them?
To reflect on the need to raise one’s voice, be part of this interactive installation in ICA LA’s annex gallery where you can create hand-drawn messages that will be projected on an oversized blank picket sign. Raising My Voice will feature a typical classroom table, an overhead projector, and supplies available to the public to create their messages. The artist is featured in a short educational video in the installation about confrontation and protest in the context of the current political climate. Instructions in the video will help participants create an appropriate tone and slogan for their unique message.
On February 3rd at 3-5pm, we invite you to participate in a Raising My Voice workshop with Mandy Harris Williams at ICA LA.
Thanks to Artist & Craftsman Supply for providing materials to make this project possible.
