Cardboard House Press

Bookshelf Residency

Cardboard House Press is dedicated to the creation of Spanish-English bilingual spaces through small-press publishing, community workshops, and bilingual events. Based in Phoenix, Arizona, and founded in 2014, the press specializes in publishing Latin American and Spanish poetry in translation, with a special interest in contemporary documentary and conceptual poetics, and the historical avant-garde. Cardboard House Press’s editions have used a variety of printing techniques, including silkscreen, linocut, stencil, letterpress, and digital printing. Some of the titles are bound with recycled cardboard in community workshops, following in the tradition of the cartonera publishing movement in Latin America.

Cartonera Collective is one of Cardboard House Press’s community projects, which consists of facilitating workshops where bilingual editions are handcrafted with members of the community. These workshops not only expand audiences, but also provide a hands-on experience in which community members participate in production, develop connections to the poetry, and widen their creative and cultural horizons. Facilitated by Ryan Greene, maryhope|whitehead|lee, and Claudia Núñez de Ibieta, the workshops create space for participants to learn techniques including hand sewing and binding pages, marbling endpapers, linocut printing, and creating book covers from recycled cardboard. Learn more about the Cardboard House Press Cartonera Collective on their website.
