One Hundred Mules Walking the Los Angeles Aqueduct, 2013. Josh White Photograph. To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the opening of the Los Angeles Aqueduct in 1913, we walked with one hundred mules the 240 miles of ditches, pipes and channels that move water from the snow melt of the Eastern Sierra to the city of Los Angeles. The mules were the essential labor force in building this aqueduct. This performative action aimed to reconnect the city of Los Angeles with the source of its water and pay homage to the quiet dignity of the mule and the patient pace of its progress across this epic landscape.
