From its independence in 1810 until the economic crisis of 2001, #Argentina was seen as a modern country in #LatinAmerica. ‘Photography in Argentina, 1850–2010: Contradiction and Continuity’ @gettymuseum examines socio-political themes and aesthetic movements in which #photography had a critical role to play and reveals how #history was and is understood along this timeline | #PhotographyinArgentina #PSTLALA #gustavodimario #gettycenter #icala #PSTinstaswap #MuseumInstaSwap (pictured) ‘Malambistas I / Malambo Dancers I’, 2014 - Gustavo di Mario. While incarcerated in California, ICA LA artist #MartinRamirez (1895-1963) drew upon his memory of cowboys from #Mexico, and perhaps his exposure to popular culture in the United States, to create his own idealised protagonists - his 'caballeros' aim their pistols while skilfully shooting backwards in the saddle. Similar to this series by @achadimario, Ramirez repeatedly drew these scenes with subtle variations, and when viewed in a sequence, they allude to a greater contextual landscape with an enduring relevance about formulating #identity | #PhotographyinArgentina #PSTLALA #gustavodimario #gettycenter #icala #PSTinstaswap #MuseumInstaSwap (pictured) ‘Malambistas II / Malambo Dancers II’, 2014 and ‘Malambistas III / Malambo Dancers III’, 2014 - Gustavo di Mario. Malambo is a male #dance from Argentina. During the 19th century #malambo was performed by gauchos (cowboys) to prove their skill through the complexity of their movements. A symbol of legends and folklore, the gaucho was both a myth and a symbol of idealised masculinity. Contemporary artist Gustavo di Mario’s practice explores queering space that is traditionally masculine and homogeneous. In his ‘Malambistas’ series, he plays with this image of #masculinity through the context of #fashionphotography | #queer #art #PhotographyinArgentina #PSTLALA #gustavodimario #gettycenter #icala #PSTinstaswap #MuseumInstaSwap (pictured) ‘Malambistas IV / Malambo Dancers IV’, 2014 - Gustavo di Mario. The railroads became gateways to new countries and for new opportunity. Social movements across #LatinAmerica targeted the metropolis by encouraging large municipal projects like bridges and railways that fostered the movement of people and goods. While these cities began to reconsider their identity when symbols of colonial power were being removed, immigration was on the rise in #California - #LosAngeles exploded by the 1930s reaching a population of over 1 million. Migrant laborers like #MartinRamirez would’ve left #Mexico to seek work - railroads, tunnels and roads are prolific elements in his drawings | #TheMetropolisinLatinAmerica #PSTLALA #GettyResearchInstitute #gettycenter #icala #PSTinstaswap #MuseumInstaSwap (pictured) ‘Raymond Special on the Metlac Bridge’, Mexico City-Veracruz, ca. 1897 - Charles Betts Waite (1861–1927).
