Lawrence Weiner considers a matter central to his life as an artist: what is a table? The work unfolds as a humorous dialogue in which Weiner both asks and answers the questions that even the most erudite observers of his work have been eager to clarify, but perhaps too shy to ask. Printed using an unconventional technique on a cylinder-moldmade paper, the inks are rendered not just as colors, but as multi-dimensional, material substances, each having a unique personality based on tack, viscosity, and the optical characteristics of the pigment. The result is an intense contrast between a fluid, highly transparent blue and a stiff, viscous red, the inks Weiner has chosen for the two voices in dialogue in the work.
