Chuck Close’s Scribble Book: Self-Portrait reveals the process of its own making. Both the artist’s decisions as well as the logic of the print medium are shown step by step. In Volume 1, the nine unique plates are printed as individual plate proofs in their respective colors, revealing the underlying structure of each step in the printing process. In Volume 2, these nine plates are printed progressively to show the buildup of the self-portrait as each new color is added, beginning with one color, then two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, until Close brings the work to its desired balance with a ninth and final color.
